Red Canoe Says: Founded in 1928, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (DHC) quickly became one of the world’s great aircraft manufacturers. Initially assembling British-made Moth Airplanes—which made flying accessible and popular in Canada—DHC went on to design and produce bush utility, military and commuter aircraft. Their best-known designs include the Chipmunk, Beaver, Otter, Twin Otter and Caribou.

Red Canoe Says: Piper Cub. In the mid-1930s, Bill Piper brought in Walter Jamouneau, and under his direction, the original Cub was modified to its historic, bright yellow J-3 version. Powered by a 40 hp (30kW) engine, in 1938 it sold for just over $1,000.

During World War II, newspapers of the era often featured images of wartime leaders, such as Generals Dwight Eisenhower & George Patton surveying European battlefields in Piper Cubs.

RED CANOE – VIMY CAP

Red Canoe Says: On the front of the cap is the magnificent Vimy Memorial designed by Walter S. Allward, unveiled in 1936 by the Canadian Government on land given to the nation by France, to honour Canada’s WWI sacrifice of 60,000 dead. The four vertical bands on the side of the Vimy Baseball Cap represent the four Canadian divisions which fought together for the first time on April 9, 1917 at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The green represents the Fourth Division, the grey-blue the Third Division, the dark blue the Second Division and the red the First Division. The order of the ribbon’s (left to right) colours reflects the positioning of the Canadian Divisions facing the German defences on the day of the battle. Inscribed on the back of the cap is the date of the Battle of Vimy Ridge: April 9th, 1917.

RED CANOE – SPITFIRE CAP

Red Canoe Says: The SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE, powered by early model Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during and after World War II. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft. The Spitfire was designed by R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works.

This classic six-panel cap pays homage to the single-seat fighter aircraft that won the hearts of pilots and the public during WW2. Our Supermarine Spitfire Cap is made of brushed cotton twill and features an ellipse-shaped woven patch with direct embroidery. The RAF’s fuselage roundel is embroidered on the left side of the cap, with a thin yellow outer ring – this was to ensure the roundel was visible against the camouflaged aircraft. Alongside the roundel is the squadron and aircraft ID (EB-G). Embroidered on the back in a vintage script is ‘Supermarine’ alongside the Union Jack. This everyday cap will win the hearts of many aviation enthusiasts.

The heritage collection was designed in honour of the men and women who served — and who serve today — in the Royal Canadian Air Force. That’s why a portion from the sale of all our RCAF products goes to support veterans. When the RCAF first started in 1924, they focused on civil air missions like forestry patrols, land surveys and anti-smuggling efforts. Red Canoe Says: Our classic RCAF caps have stood the test of time and help to raise funds for our Canadian Airforce Veterans Association in conjunction with the Department of National Defence. The roundel we feature reflects the original artwork created for the RCAF Roundel and two layers of vintage style appliqué complete the package. deHavilland Tiger Moths, Chipmunks and later NAA Harvards military training aircraft were painted the iconic yellow and also featured the silver bordered Canadian flags we’ve added to the rear port side of the caps. Made of 100% brushed cotton.
